BIOS (basic input/output system) is a firmware loading system for IBM PC compatible computers. It's primary purpose it to provide firmware for basic electronics booting on a system board before loading a more functional OS (Operating System).

The BIOS is stored on non-volatile ROM built into the system motherboard. While originally this architecture was static, modern chips can be rewritten with different firmware.
