CPU (Central Processing Unit) :- The brain on many consumer electronics including the humble PC. The CPU processes a list of instruction received via a program be it a computer program or a predefined program. CPU’s can process million’s of instructions a second. In recent times many of the functions that were exclusively in the domain of the CPU have been moved to more dedicated devices :-

GPU’s (Graphics Processing Unit ) which takes over the graphics tasks.

Northbridge which handles the communications e.g. RAM (Random Access Memory)

Southbridge which handles things like HDA (High Definition Audio), SATA, USB (Universal Serial Bus)

Nearly all of today’s CPU's are so powerful and create so much excess heat that they require some sort of cooling.
