An FTDI cable can be helpful, when you wan't to connect a computer via USB to a device, which required a serial connection, for example an Arduino. It can transfer data up an down. The advantages over simple FTDI chips are, that everything needed is included in the cable, and hasn't to stay on the board.

Hooking it up

The FTDI cable has this output pins:

  • GND - Ground
  • CTS
  • VCC - Power source
  • TxD - Serial output
  • RxD - Serial input
  • RTS - Request to send
