Firmware is the code downloaded to a microcontroller or similar device. This code affects the hardware level of the device. To give an example Firmware is the code flashed onto an Iphone. The Iphone's firmware includes the operating system and the drivers that talk to the various periphery devices such as the camera. The software in our example is the apps you install on the Iphone.
