Gauge pressure

Gauge pressure generally refers to the pressure of a fluid relative to the surrounding ambient atmospheric pressure (i.e. barometric pressure).

The term comes from the fact that, in general, pressure gauges (the big round things with the needles that go red and explode in cartoons when someone puts a cork in the top of the smokestack...) measure in comparison to the ambient air.
