A gyroscope (or gyro for short) is an electrical or electronic device that measures angular velocity, the rate at which an angle changes over time and is measured in dimensions of angle change (which is dimensionless) per unit time (T) making the basic dimension of angular velocity T^[-1]. Units with this basic dimension include degrees per second or radians per second. Gyroscopes measure angular velocity along 1, 2 or 3 axes. An unconstrained rigid body has 6 ways it can move (degrees of freedom): translation along each of 3 mutually perpendicular axes and rotation about these 3 axes. The rotational degrees of freedom are usually measured with gyroscopes.

An example gyroscope is the ST Micro LY530AH. The axis which angular velocity it measures is perpendicular to the plane of the chip.
