Leads are the individual connections to a component or package. The name can refer pins on an integrated circuit package (thru-hole or surface-mount). It can also refer to the wires that come out of a component like a resistor, capacitor, or discrete transistor, etc. Some components (like some sensors) have longer leads with insulated and even stranded wire.
