Overview
OMAP (Open Media Application Platform) processors are a proprietary type of microprocessor developed by Texas Instruments. OMAP processors are primarily intended for mobile devices, and are used in a wide variety of devices such as the majority of Nokia's N-series phones, the Palm-Pre, and the Motorola Droid. Many OMAP processors contain two cores, featuring an ARM processor coupled with a DSP, typically a variant of Texas Instrument's TMS320 DSP.
Technical Details
OMAP processors are arranges into one of three categories: "High Performance", "Basic Multimedia", or "Modem and Applications". The High Performance line consist of OMAP1 - OMAP4 processors, and are coupled with an ARM core processor as well. Basic Multimedia chips are market toward handsets, allowing intensive processing, but highly integrated and low-cost. Modem and Applications chips are likewise the slowest and cheapest, intended for low-end devices with more minimal processing needs.
