The term "Sensor" is commonly used to refer to an electrical transducer. This is something that turns a physical change into an electrical change. Examples include a microphone, photocell, switch, encoder, potentiometer, accelerometer etc. Electrical transducers most commonly vary resistance, or generate some type of voltage or current signal in a quantity that is related to the physical stimulus.
